Rediscovering Instant Magic: The Polaroid Supercolor 635 CL Camera
The Polaroid Supercolor 635 CL is a classic 1980s instant camera from the 600 series, prized for its simplicity and vibrant results. It was upgrade over the 635. Compared to the 635, the 635 CL had a built-in close up lens (CL) which allowed taking pictures closer up to 60 cm.
Known for its rainbow stripe design and built-in features, it delivers square 79mm x 79mm photos using Type 600 film.
Key Features
This fixed-focus instant camera uses a plastic lens around 106-116mm with a maximum aperture of f/11 to f/14. Shutter speeds range from 1/200s to 1/4s or 1/3s, powered by program automatic exposure and a light meter. Film transport is automatic via motor, and the built-in electronic flash (powered by film pack batteries) fires for every shot, with a range of 2-10 feet.
Close-Up Capability
The “CL” stands for Close-up Lens, a standout feature: slide it over the main lens via a lever to shorten focus from 1.2m-infinity to 0.6-1.2m. This enables sharp portraits or details without autofocus or zoom.
Design and Operation
Weighing light and folding flat for portability, it includes a direct viewfinder and lighten/darken slider (+/-1EV). Raise the flash unit—it charges in 3 seconds—and the electronic shutter handles exposure automatically. No manual modes or date imprinting, keeping it beginner-friendly.
Modern Appeal
Refurbished models are available today, compatible with new Polaroid 600 film for authentic instant prints.
This camera belonged to a friend and I had kept it for sometime for a project and was super fun to play with!
